VERTU’s Sapphire Screen: A Tribute to Princess Diana's Love
When you looked into Princess Diana’s eyes, you saw deep blue pools of pure compassion. Maybe that is why the princess loved sapphires so much, as they perfectly matched her eye colour. VERTU created its sapphire phone screen to celebrate the beauty and elegance of Britain’s most beloved princess. You might think that this was a much too expensive decision, even for a luxury couture phone. But for VERTU, designing a fitting tribute to Diana was worth any price.
VERTU sapphire crystal screens are created by melting gemstones in a 2,000℃ fire then carving them with a diamond-head wand for perfect precision. And now every time the screen lights up, it is like the flash of a distant memory. A pair of pure blue eyes illuminated by a loving heart.
Luxury Materials with Skilled Handcrafted
Sapphire ranks 9 (the highest Mohs hardness value is 10) on the Mohs hardness scale and it has excellent toughness and no cleavage, which is a tendency to break when struck. This makes it a great choice for rings and phone screens for daily wear. So, unless you have a diamond in your pocket, a phone with a sapphire display in your pocket won't suffer any scratches after months of use.
The use of sapphire as a phone screen had no precedent before at VERTU. To make this, the VERTU team searched the world to create an extraordinary phone and finally settled on a process for making sapphire as a phone screen in France.
The sapphire crystal screen showcases our world-class craftsmanship to a tee. The design demands hair’s breadth precision — too thin and it’s easy to damage, too thick and the screen lacks sensitivity. But VERTU knows that for picture-perfect visuals, only the best will do. Get it melted in a furnace at 2000°C, then cut, smoothed, and polished by a diamond-head tool, and finally, we get a whole sapphire crystal screen.
