For a long flight, noise-cancelling headphones are usually the better primary choice because they reduce the temptation to raise volume against steady cabin noise. Open-ear earbuds are better for terminal awareness, conversations and travellers who dislike pressure or ear-canal contact, but they do not isolate you from engine and airflow noise.
