Luxury Car Lease vs Buy: The 36-Month Cost and Flexibility Test

Test leasing against buying a luxury car over 36 months using depreciation, finance, mileage, tax, exit cost, flexibility and model-change scenarios.

Leasing is not automatically the cheaper way to drive a luxury car, and buying is not automatically the more sensible way to build value. Over 36 months, the choice depends on cash outflow, end equity or residual value, mileage, maintenance exposure and the price of changing course early. A low payment can conceal initial fees, a restrictive mileage allowance or an expensive exit. A larger finance payment may still support a lower net cost if the car retains sufficient value.

The useful comparison is not “Which payment is lower?” but “What does each route cost for 36 months, what obligations do I accept, and what flexibility remains?” This worksheet uses actual written offers. It is an illustrative framework, not financial, tax or legal advice, and contains no invented rates, residuals or incentives.

Begin with the 36-month decision, not the monthly payment

A lease payment usually reflects the expected loss in value during the term, plus a rent charge, taxes and fees. The US Federal Trade Commission's financing and leasing guide explains that the customer pays to drive the car rather than to buy it, then normally returns it unless the agreement provides a purchase option. That can produce a lower monthly payment than financing the same vehicle, but it does not establish a lower total cost.

Buying with finance is a different balance-sheet decision. Payments reduce a loan balance and leave a vehicle to sell, trade or keep, while the owner assumes depreciation and sale risk. A cash purchase removes the finance charge but commits capital. Two monthly payments cannot capture those differences.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's comparison guidance recommends examining APR, interest rate, term and total amount financed, not just monthly payment. That discipline applies especially strongly to high-value cars, where a small change in rate, residual value or sale price can materially change the 36-month result.

Build a like-for-like cost sheet

Use the same vehicle specification, mileage, holding period and insurance assumptions for both routes. Separate refundable deposits from non-refundable initial payments. Where tax treatment varies by jurisdiction or business use, obtain local advice and assess it outside this general worksheet.

The table deliberately contains no sample deal rate. Populate it with written quotations dated closely enough to be comparable. If a dealer changes the vehicle, deposit, term or mileage to improve one payment, restore the common assumptions before deciding.

Calculate the lease route without hiding the return obligation

A practical 36-month lease-use cost begins with all non-refundable amounts paid at signing, adds every scheduled payment and any known taxes or compulsory fees, then adds a reasonable allowance for mileage, wear, maintenance and disposition. Subtract only amounts that are contractually refundable. If the plan is to exercise a purchase option, model that as a separate scenario because it changes the capital requirement and exposes the buyer to the option price versus market value.

That equation is not a forecast until its inputs are evidenced. Read the return standard, wheel and tyre requirements, and repair-assessment process. Derive mileage from recent use, not the optimistic case used to obtain a lower payment.

The FTC notes that standard leases commonly impose annual mileage limits and may charge for exceeding them; it also highlights responsibility for excess wear, missing equipment, required servicing, insurance standards and potentially substantial early-termination charges. These are not footnotes to the monthly payment. They define the operating envelope.

A restrictive allowance can undermine an attractive proposal for long journeys or changing work patterns. A predictable low-mileage driver who changes cars on a fixed cycle may accept the return conditions in exchange for transferring resale-price risk.

Calculate ownership as net cost, not gross payments

For a financed purchase, add the deposit, fees, first 36 months of payments and ownership costs not shared with the lease. Subtract net equity: conservative sale or trade value minus the month-36 settlement amount. Apply the same mark-to-market discipline if the car is kept.

36-month ownership cost = initial cash + payments and ownership costs − (conservative vehicle value − outstanding finance balance).

For a cash purchase, replace finance payments and balance with the purchase cash and end value, then assess liquidity and opportunity cost separately. Do not invent a universal return on capital; use the owner's actual decision rule.

The CFPB's glossary of auto-finance terms defines total cost as principal, interest and down payment or trade-in over the life of the loan. It also distinguishes fixed and variable rates and explains that a larger deposit can reduce the amount borrowed and total financing cost. For a 36-month ownership test, the full contractual disclosures still matter even when the intended sale occurs before the loan ends.

Resale value is a major uncertainty. Use three cases: conservative trade value, plausible specialist or private-sale proceeds after costs, and a stress value for an unfavourable market or excess mileage. Never treat an advertised retail price as cash the owner will receive.

Mileage creates an asymmetry, not a free advantage

Mileage is charged explicitly in many leases and implicitly through depreciation when a car is owned. The Federal Reserve's leasing-versus-buying mileage comparison explains that leases commonly limit annual miles and can charge for excess use, while greater mileage on an owned car reduces trade-in or resale value. The economic cost exists on both sides; only the mechanism differs.

Ask not only whether the lease includes enough miles, but how uncertain the forecast is. Stable annual travel supports a precise allowance; changing work, shared use or long seasonal journeys require a wider margin.

Where higher mileage can be purchased in advance, compare that written cost with the contract's end-of-term excess rate. Do not assume unused prepaid mileage will be refunded. For ownership, compare like-for-like valuation evidence at the expected mileage. A generic low-mileage residual estimate will overstate equity if the car will be driven substantially more.

Flexibility has a price that should be made visible

Leasing can provide predictable rotation into a new car at the scheduled end of term. It can also be rigid inside the term. Early termination, relocation to another country, changes in insurance or inability to transfer the agreement can create friction. The relevant flexibility metric is the cost and process of leaving at months 12, 24 and 36—not merely the simplicity of returning the car on schedule.

Ownership provides control over timing, mileage, modification and sale, subject to the finance agreement and market liquidity. Yet it also exposes the owner to a weak resale market and the administrative work of achieving a good price. A highly specified luxury car may have a narrow buyer pool; a rapid sale can produce a different outcome from a patient specialist sale.

Request written early-exit illustrations. For a lease, confirm the termination method and whether transfer is permitted. For finance, model settlement and sale costs. If an early change is plausible, give that cost real weight.

Match the route to the ownership profile

A lease can fit a driver who wants a new car every fixed cycle, has stable mileage, values warranty-period operation, accepts return standards and prefers not to carry end-value risk. The decision improves when the written lease is transparent, the intended mileage is comfortably covered and early termination is unlikely.

Buying can fit a driver who wants mileage freedom, may keep the car beyond 36 months, values control over specification and timing, or believes the vehicle will retain value—but can tolerate the risk that it will not. It may also suit an owner who dislikes contractual wear assessments or expects circumstances to change.

Run three stress tests before signing

First, test lower end value. Reduce the expected sale proceeds for the purchase route and recalculate equity. If a modest change reverses the result, the apparent buying advantage is a resale forecast rather than a robust cost advantage.

Second, test higher mileage and wear. Apply the lease's written rates and return standards; lower the owned car's end value consistently. This shows whether either route is unusually sensitive to use.

Third, test an early change. Calculate the month-12 and month-24 exit using the contract, settlement balance and conservative sale evidence. Include the administrative time and liquidity required. Choose the route that produces the better risk-adjusted 36-month outcome for your actual use, not the more flattering monthly payment. Buying creates an asset and more operating control, but leaves the owner with depreciation, sale and market risk.

Build both totals from written evidence, subtract ownership equity conservatively, and test mileage, end value and early exit. If the result changes dramatically under modest assumptions, the decision is not yet stable; negotiate the uncertain input or choose the structure whose downside you can manage.
