By aircraft capability, Qantas Project Sunrise is preparing to push the ceiling further with planned Sydney–London and Sydney–New York journeys of up to 22 hours.
That does not make a July 2026 Project Sunrise test flight the new longest commercial flight. Test, delivery and positioning flights are not scheduled passenger services. Nor does an announced route enter the live ranking before customers can book and fly it. A useful answer must separate what operates now, what has been completed as a test and what is planned.
The more important buyer question is not which route wins a record. It is whether the route’s time, cabin, price and recovery cost make it the best way to reach a destination.

When a headline calls something the “world’s longest flight”, check which column it is using. A route can be longest by distance without having the longest published schedule. A one-off test can fly farther than any current passenger service without becoming a route at all.
The current benchmark: Singapore to New York
Singapore Airlines operates non-stop services between Singapore and the New York area using Airbus A350-900ULR aircraft. The route is commonly recognised as the current scheduled-distance benchmark, at roughly 15,300 kilometres depending on the airport pair and measurement method. Timetabled duration is around 18 hours, with direction and conditions affecting the figure.
The service demonstrates two essential facts about ultra-long-haul travel. First, aircraft range alone is not enough; cabin density and payload must be designed for the mission. Second, the same city pair can feel different by direction because winds and local departure times change the sleep opportunity.
Other long scheduled routes include links between Singapore and the US West Coast, Perth and London, Auckland and New York, and Middle Eastern hubs and Australasia or North America. Their positions move when airlines alter schedules, suspend routes or change airports. A static top-ten list is therefore less reliable than a method the reader can update.
How Project Sunrise changes the future ranking
Qantas plans to use the Airbus A350-1000ULR for non-stop Sydney–London and Sydney–New York services. Airbus says the modified aircraft is intended for journeys of almost 10,000 nautical miles and flight times of up to 22 hours. The design adds a rear-centre fuel tank, changes the fuel architecture and validates new cabin-cooling equipment.
If Sydney–London begins as announced, it is expected to exceed the current Singapore–New York distance benchmark. Sydney–New York would also sit at the extreme end of the live table. But a future route should remain in a separate “announced” column until three things occur: final certification, published schedule and completed revenue service.
Qantas has said the aircraft will carry only 238 passengers. Its Project Sunrise cabin plan includes first, business, premium economy and economy cabins plus a wellbeing zone. The lower density is not a decorative detail. On a 20-hour-plus mission, seat access, aisle movement, galley capacity, lighting and temperature become part of the route’s viability.

Why flight time does not equal travel time
Answer 22-hour non-stop flight sounds longer than an 18-hour flight plus a connection. Door-to-door arithmetic can reverse that impression. A connection adds taxiing, deplaning, walking, security or transit checks, lounge time, boarding and the risk of a missed second sector. A non-stop service concentrates the journey but removes the transfer.
To compare fairly, calculate:
Home-to-airport time + check-in buffer + scheduled block time + connection time + disruption buffer + arrival formalities + destination transfer.
Then add a recovery estimate. A traveller who arrives three hours sooner but cannot function for the rest of the day has not necessarily saved useful time. Conversely, an executive who avoids a fragile connection before a fixed meeting may value the non-stop service far above the timetable difference.

Ultra-long-haul travel increases continuous sitting, dry-cabin exposure and circadian disruption. General advice to move, hydrate and manage light is not a substitute for individual medical guidance. Is the route live, announced or only tested? Do not pay around a future schedule that is not in the booking system.
What is the true door-to-door saving? Include the quality and risk of the connection you would otherwise choose.
Which cabin can you sustain? Judge the exact seat map and arrival-day cost.
What happens after cancellation? Look at alternate aircraft, partner routes and fare flexibility.
What local time will your body think it is? A record-breaking route can still be a poor schedule.
If the non-stop option wins four of the five, the record may translate into real value. If it wins only the distance column, the one-stop itinerary may be better.

In July 2026, Singapore–New York remains the clearest answer to “what is the longest scheduled passenger flight?” when ranking regular non-stop routes by distance. Qantas Project Sunrise is expected to change that answer when Sydney–London begins commercial service, with journeys approaching 17,000 kilometres and up to about 22 hours.
Until then, the Melbourne-arriving test aircraft belongs in the engineering timeline, not the live passenger table. That distinction makes the guide less sensational and more useful.
The world’s longest flight is a moving record. The best flight is a personal calculation: time saved, connection risk removed, cabin purchased, recovery required and alternatives available.
