AirPods 5 vs VERTU Phantom OWS: listening and calling are different tests

By VERTU Buyer Guide DeskPublished on Sep 11, 2026

AirPods 5 or VERTU Phantom OWS? Separate listening ANC from call noise reduction, compare wearing styles and check the AI features your phone supports.

AirPods 5 are the clearer starting point if you want Apple's open-fit earbuds with listening Active Noise Cancellation and use a compatible Apple setup. VERTU Phantom OWS deserves consideration if its wearing arrangement, design and advertised AI functions are the attraction—but confirm those functions with your phone and do not equate call noise reduction with listening ANC.

This comparison uses official information checked on 11 September 2026. It is not a listening test. We have excluded conflicting Phantom battery, weight and driver figures rather than turning inconsistent product copy into a specification verdict.

The key distinction: listening ANC changes what reaches your ears; microphone noise processing changes what the other person hears. A product can offer one without delivering an equivalent version of the other.

Decide whose noise problem you are solving

If your problem is the sound of a train or office reaching you, assess listening isolation and ANC. If callers struggle to hear you outdoors, assess microphone pickup, wind handling and voice processing. If both matter, run both tests. A clear call recording cannot establish that music listening becomes quieter.

Apple's AirPods 5 announcement explicitly describes listening ANC. The Phantom OWS page advertises its own wearing and AI-assisted features. Read the precise function attached to each noise claim instead of comparing the word “noise” in isolation.

Open-fit and open-ear labels also require inspection. They do not guarantee identical placement, stability, leakage or comfort. Your ear shape, glasses and preferred volume affect the experience. A product category is a useful starting point, not a substitute for a fit trial.

Your situation Test what you hear Test what others hear Purchasing implication
A noisy commute Speech and music at a comfortable volume A short call in the same environment Listening ANC and call clarity need separate evidence
A quiet shared office Comfort over time and awareness of nearby speech Leakage audible to a nearby colleague Avoid deciding from bass response alone
Walking outdoors Stability with glasses and normal movement Wind noise and voice intelligibility A quiet-room demo is insufficient
Frequent video calls Connection stability during a full meeting Voice consistency and room noise Test with the actual computer or phone
Translation on a trip Supported languages and audible output Whether the conversation workflow is practical Verify the app and phone requirements first

AirPods 5: choose the correct package

Apple announces AirPods 5 at $129 in the US and a version with a Wireless Charging Case at $149. Both are described with ANC; the higher-priced package adds capabilities including on-stem volume control. These are announced US prices, not a worldwide quotation.

The $20 difference should therefore be compared against the features you will use, rather than assuming it is only a different way to charge the same package. Check the current AirPods 5 product page and your local configuration before paying.

Apple lists initial store availability for 18 September. A pre-order date or announced availability does not prove that your chosen local retailer has stock. If you need earbuds for a particular journey, rely on the actual order estimate and understand the return policy if the fit is unsuitable.

Phantom OWS: verify the feature you intend to buy

Phantom's public product page describes AI call noise processing. Ask to see the precise model, wearing position and any companion application. If translation or transcription is part of the offer you are considering, request a demonstration on your own phone before treating it as an included feature.

For transcription, use a short non-sensitive sample with two speakers and check attribution, omitted words and the export format. For translation, test the actual language pair and confirm whether a phone, network connection, downloaded language pack or subscription is required. A general AI label does not answer those questions.

Published Phantom specifications are not fully consistent across VERTU's product materials, including conflicting driver and weight figures on the product page itself. This guide does not select one battery duration, driver size or weight as authoritative. If one of those numbers decides your purchase, request a written specification for the exact SKU and retain it with the order.

Treat compatibility as a feature-by-feature check

Basic Bluetooth playback does not establish full feature parity across devices. A phone may play audio while lacking a particular assistant action, setting, automatic switching function or translation feature. Make a list of the functions you need before asking whether an earbud is “compatible”.

Apple says full AirPods 5 functionality depends on supported Apple hardware and current software. AI and Live Translation features have additional language, region and device conditions. Consult the Apple Intelligence requirements for the current combination rather than assuming every paired phone enables every advertised feature.

For either product, include your second device in the test if you switch between a phone and a work computer. Try answering a call while another device is playing audio, reconnecting after a meeting and controlling volume without opening an app. These small transitions often matter more during a working day than a specification advantage.

A repeatable three-environment trial

Start in a quiet room with familiar spoken audio and music at a modest volume. Assess fit without trying to compensate for a poor seal or position by turning the volume up. Move your head, speak and put on any glasses you normally wear.

Next, try an ordinary outdoor setting where it is safe to stop and listen. Check fit, awareness and call pickup; do not create a road-safety test or rely on a listening mode to make crossing traffic safe. Ask the person receiving the call to describe interruptions and wind noise, not simply whether your voice is audible.

Finally, sit in the environment where you expect to use the earbuds for longest. Run a realistic meeting or listening session and note discomfort, reconnection problems and the charging routine. If a retailer cannot offer a trial, the return conditions become a material part of the decision.

Choose for the job you can actually verify

Choose AirPods 5 when supported Apple features and explicit listening ANC are your priorities, after confirming the package and fit. Consider Phantom OWS when its design and demonstrated functions are the reason for the purchase, with unresolved specifications clarified in writing where they matter.

Neither recommendation is a claim about superior sound quality from specifications alone. The useful winner is the product that remains comfortable, works with your devices and solves the correct noise problem—not the one whose marketing uses the broadest version of “AI”.
