You can delete Gemini Apps activity without deleting your Google Account, but the action is narrower than many users assume. It can remove selected chats or time ranges from Gemini Apps Activity; it does not automatically delete data held by connected Google services, public shared-chat links or the Gems you created. Turning off Keep Activity also changes which connected apps are available.
The safest approach is to decide what outcome you want—remove one sensitive session, shorten retention, stop future activity storage or close a shared exposure—then use the matching control.

Google’s Gemini Apps Activity instructions say users can delete the last hour, last day, a custom range, a specific item or all time. They also state that the default auto-delete period is 18 months, with options for 3 or 36 months or no auto-delete. Work and school accounts may be controlled by an administrator.
Step 1: inventory what the workflow depends on
Before changing Keep Activity, list the connected functions you genuinely use. Google says turning Keep Activity off can make services such as Workspace, Flights, Hotels, Maps, Photos, Spotify and YouTube unavailable to Gemini, while some communications utilities remain available.
Use a simple dependency sheet:

This prevents a privacy change from arriving as an unexplained productivity failure during a trip or deadline.
Step 2: remove the smallest necessary scope
If one prompt contains confidential information, delete that item rather than clearing everything reflexively. If a project ran for a defined week, use a custom range. A smaller scope preserves useful history and makes it easier to verify what changed.
Google says deleting a Gemini Live activity item also deletes related audio, transcript, video and screen-share material associated with that activity. However, the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains important limits: chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years, disconnected from the account, and some data may be kept longer for security, fraud, legal or financial reasons.
Deletion is therefore a control, not a promise that every copy vanishes instantly from every system.
Step 3: clean up the things deletion does not touch
After deleting activity, review these separately:
Shared chats: remove public links if they should no longer be accessible.
Gems: delete the Gem if the reusable instructions or files are themselves sensitive.
Connected services: remove or edit data in Gmail, Drive, Photos or another service at the source.
App permissions: disconnect services that no longer need Gemini access.
Exports and screenshots: remove local or team copies under the appropriate retention policy.
Work accounts: ask the Workspace administrator what organisation-level retention applies.
Google explicitly notes that deleting Gemini activity does not delete data in other services, and deleting content in a connected app does not automatically delete the corresponding Gemini activity. Treat them as separate stores.
Step 4: choose a retention posture
Three common postures are defensible:
Convenience-first
Keep Activity on, retain the default period and review sensitive entries after use. This preserves connected features but requires disciplined prompting and periodic housekeeping.
Reduced-retention
Keep Activity on and set auto-delete to three months. This retains integrated workflows while shortening the normal history window. It does not change all exceptional retention described in the privacy hub.
Minimal-history
Turn Keep Activity off and accept the loss of some connected-app functions. Google says future conversations are still saved with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback and protect users, but they do not appear in Activity and are not used to train models unless feedback is submitted.
Choose per account. A personal travel assistant and a managed work account should not automatically share one policy.
Step 5: verify after deletion
Do not stop at the confirmation message.
Reload Gemini Apps Activity and confirm the item or range is absent.
Open shared-link management and test any link meant to be removed.
Review connected apps and disconnect unneeded services.
Confirm that required workflows still function.
Record the date and policy decision for a managed account.
Recheck auto-delete because “delete all time” and “future retention” are separate settings.

What not to put into Gemini in the first place
Deletion is weaker than data minimisation. Do not paste passwords, recovery codes, private signing keys, full payment-card details or unredacted identity documents into a general assistant. Use approved enterprise environments for business data and remove client identifiers when the task can be completed without them.
When a task requires a connected app, grant only the necessary access and disconnect it after the project. A sophisticated model cannot compensate for indefinite, unexplained permission.
The considered answer
For a managed executive account, document who owns the retention decision and when it will be reviewed. Personal preference cannot override an employer's legal hold, security investigation or approved records policy. If the settings are administrator-controlled, record the boundary rather than repeatedly attempting a control the user does not own.
Delete the smallest relevant activity scope, then separately remove shared links, Gems and connected-service data where needed. Use a three-month auto-delete period if you want integrated workflows with shorter retention; turn Keep Activity off only after accepting the connected-app consequences and the stated temporary retention.
The key is to treat privacy as a data map, not a single button. Gemini Activity is one layer. Shared links, connected products, managed-account policy and local copies are others.
